About Royal Botanic Gardens Peradeniya
In 1821, Royal Botanic Gardens Peradeniya was founded after the final employment of the Kandyan Kingdom by the English. The Royal Botanic Gardens Peradeniya is governed by the Department of National Botanic Gardens, Sri Lanka, and is located above 460 meters of sea level.
Including Orchids and shrubs, Flowers, Ferns, Medicinal Plants, Woody Trees, and Palms, you will see more than 4000 species of plants at Royal Botanic Gardens Peradeniya.
It is recommended to explore Royal Botanic Gardens Peradeniya by walking as you can see so many attractions. Some of them are;
- The Lake is planted with different (Nymphaea) plants and Nile (Cyperus papyrus), and you will find it at the main entrance of South Drive.
- Flowering Trees & the Arboretum: Here are some of the beautiful attractions you will explore at the garden. The flowering trees bloom during the first half of the year.
- Fernery includes a range of 100 Indigenous species. With creepers and climbing vines, it is shaded by lofty trees draped.
- Double Coconut Palms can be seen to the left of the Main Central Drive at Monument Road. Double Coconut (Lodoicea maldivica) is famous for producing the largest palm seed among all plants.
- The Flower Garden can be seen near the Orchid House. The Royal Palm Avenue along the Main Central Drive (Roystonia regia), the Palmyrah Palm Avenue (Borassus flabellifer), and the graceful Cabbage Palm Avenue (Roystonia oleracea) are the three amazing avenues you can explore at the Flower Garden.
- Great Lawn is located near Monument Road. You will discover Java Fig Tree (Ficus benjamina) and Java Willow here.
- The Bamboo Collection, it is located right side of the Lake, and here you will find the feather – leaved bamboo (Dendrocalamus membranaceus), the yellow building bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris), Dwarf Chinese bamboo, the prickly bamboo (Bambusa spinosa), and the world’s largest The giant bamboo of Burma (Dendrocalamus giganteus).
- Spice Garden is on the right side of the main entrance. Here, you can catch a glimpse of Allspice (Pimenta dioica) trees and bay leaf (Pimenta racemosa) and species like pepper cinnamon, nutmeg, and cardamom.
- Orchid House & Gardens of Royal Botanic Gardens Peradeniya, here you will find blooms of Phalaenopsis, Oncidium, Dendrobium, Arachnis, Vanda, Cattleya, and more.
- Cacti & Plant House: Cacti can be found in the Cactus House, including 800 specimens. You will see Rhipsalis, Cereus, agaves, aloes, and Opuntia.
The Plant House has so many plants, such as Dieffenbachia, Bromelia, Ferns, Calathea, African violets, Philodendron, Begonias, Anthurium, and Episcia.
